Northern Ontario Fishing on Kabinakagami Lake

Kabinakagami Lake, known as "Big Kaby" is reknowned as a fishing meca by those who have been. Fantastic lake fishing for Walleye and Northern Pike is complimented by great fishing for Yellow Perch as well as Whitefish. Big Kaby is 25 miles long with 30,802 acres of pristine fresh water and is one of the headwaters for the extensive watershed flowing northward into Hudson Bay. Accessable only by air or traditional means, Big Kaby's resources are well suited to the species found in our region. With ice out in early May, the big Northern Pike can be found in the shallow bays and submerged remains of last years weedbeds. Large females can easily be seen as they spawn in these shallows immediately following  iceout. Multiple smaller males can be found persuing these females. Keep in mind that "smaller" is a relative term since many of these females can exceed 40 to 45 inches in length.  Fishing for these brutes is a source of heart pounding excitement. Mainly large spoons and minnow type baits cranked as deep as possible in these shallow waters can elicit wild charges and screaming reels as they take almost anything offered. Post spawn, these fresh water behemoths are into a big time feed to refuel their depleted resources after a long winter under the ice.

Shortly there after the Big lake's Walleye enter into a similar ritual of reproduction, mainly in the many rivers and streams which flow into Big Kaby. Though they prefer the flowing waters, Big Kaby's Walleye will also spawn on the many shoals and beach approaches found throughout the lake. The third Saturday of May heralds the opening of Walleye fishing on Kabinakagami Lake. The guests of Watson's Kaby Lodge begin to arrive on the Friday preceeding to establish themselves for the big opener by warming up with a day of Pike fishing.  The opener typically will have the Walleye finishing their spawn and heading back out into the lake voracious for whatever presents itself. Early season Walleye will target mainly flashy spinners and bright jigs and tails presented with a slower movement. These predators are still somewhat lethargic with the cold spring waters. Spring's bright sun quickly warms Big Kaby's relatively shallow waters. With depths averaging 20 to 25 feet of deep tea coloured water, the warmth of the sun soon begins elevating the cool temperatures. As the water temperature increases and the season progresses all the species found begin a ritual of heavy feeding resulting in the fantastic fishing we are famous for.

Spring quickly changes to summer in this northern climate, with dramatic flourishes of vegatation both in and around Kaby's waters. The Walleye and Pike head out into the big lakes many bays and inlets where fishermen and women continue their pursuit of the "Big One". Big Kaby's fishing resources are extensive and our efforts to ensure the long term viability of our resource is exemplified by our promotion of conservation endeavours, primarily by our promotion of the Conservation Fishing License, which we supply free of charge to our guests.  While we, as a government approved License issuer, also provide the opportunity for guests to purchase the higher limit Sports license for those who wish to take home the larger possesion limit, find the majority of our guests also regognize the benefits of conservation.
