Throughout the years, Intel has named the different computer parts that they have created and manufactured after all kinds of things. A motherboard that they launched back in 2000 was called Aladdin – named not after the Disney character but after the character from the classic “One Thousand and One Nights,” known colloquially as “Arabian Nights.”
A chipset that was created back in 1993 was called Mercury and named after the planet of the same name. Intel has also turned to a bunch of different cities, mountains and even singers (see the 1995 motherboard called Morrison after Jim Morrison of The Doors) for inspiration for names. So it wasn’t a shock to see them land on the name Kaby Lake for their latest processor, which was released back in August, as Ars Technica reports.
They really couldn’t have picked a better name, either. Kaby Lake is short for Kabinakagami Lake, the gorgeous lake here in Northern Ontario that is our home. Intel didn’t explain why they settled on Kaby Lake for the name of their processor, but if you are familiar with Kaby Lake and Watsons Kaby Lodge, then you probably understand why they wanted to associate their computer processor with this area.
